Abstract:

Algebraic quantum field theory (AQFT) is a mathematically rigorous formulation of quantum field theory based on operator algebras. The Bisognano-Wichmann theorem, discovered in the 1970s, relates Tomita-Takesaki theory to symmetries in AQFT. The purpose of this talk is to provide a survey of this important theorem. I will first present the necessary background in AQFT, and then give a heuristic explanation of why the Bisognano- Wichmann theorem holds.
