Abstract: Singularly perturbed equations naturally occur in many areas of engineering, physical and biological sciences. Due to different time scales involved in the equations, the system can have internal layer solutions that exhibit fast and slow behaviors. Fundamental problems such as the construction, asymptotic expansion of the layered solutions have been extensively studied. Less well known are the bifurcation and stability of the internal layer solutions.
In this talk we will discuss a simple example in which, as parameter changes, the number of internal layer solutions can increase through a series of saddle-node bifurcations. A geometric method will be presented which can be used to test the points of bifurcations and to determine the stability of internal layer solutions.
